Honoring Hoosier Homesteads

Eighty-eight families received Hoosier Homestead Awards at the Indiana State Fair this year . This event honored the largest number of farms ever to receive the award .
The Hoosier Homestead Program was created in 1976 by the Indiana State Department of Agriculture to honor the state ’ s agricultural heritage . In the past forty-two years , more than 5500 farms have received the honor either at the ceremony held at the Statehouse in March or at the State Fair ceremony in August .
“ These families have a sense of determination that runs generations deep ,” said State Rep . Randy Frye who attended the ceremony . “ It ’ s more than a job to them . It ’ s a calling . Their dedication amidst the technological and scientific advances that have revolutionized the last 100 years of farming sets an incredible example to all Hoosiers .”
To be named a Hoosier Homestead , farms must be owned by the same family for more than one hundred consecutive years . The property must consist of twenty acres or more or produce more than $ 1,000 in agricultural products per year . Awards were given to those who have farms that have been in the family for one hundred , one hundred fifty , and two hundred years . Nine homesteads were honored in our community .
Congratulations to these families who have such a rich heritage .
