Page 4A THE BEACON October 2018 Parklike Cemetery is Home to Majestic Trees and Flowers Continued from page 1A remember the individuals who spent a lifetime laughing and arguing, crying and celebrat- ing. Pete Nocks is a board member with the River View Cemetery Association and a volunteer with Find-A-Grave and is dedicated to photo- graphing many of the 13,600 grave sites on the property. While researching burial per- mits and scanning old news- paper articles, he sometimes comes across information that offers a glimpse into the very human stories beyond the stone markers. Mr. Nocks says, “There’s a woman back down in Sec- tion Q that I did a little bit of research on: she was actually burnt. She went up on a boat - she was married to someone; she was a teenager, really, and she had a child, but she was with two men (not her husband), on the boat. She was supposed to be a woman of ill repute. Well, she was actually having feel- ings for this other guy and not the man she was supposed to have been with. Well, the guy went up and threw gas on her - set her on fire! She jumped in the river, swam to shore, but she died. In the article, it said he, the one who threw the gas, was never charged, but the other guy that was in the boat, well, they found him in the river a couple of weeks later. That first guy, well, he must have killed him, too. I think it was in the ‘30s if I’m not mis- taken. Oh, there are all kinds of stories. It’s interesting, but it’s really sad.” No matter how tragic or noble their lives might have been, those laid to rest in the serenity and beauty of River View are integral to the his- tory of what is now Dearborn County. A soothing place with majestic trees and flowering shrubs, the park-like cemetery is located just north of SR56, a short distance from the city of Aurora. Brochures are located inside the entrance gate, detail- ing the varieties of trees and plants, with a map illustrating the sections of the grounds.
