Here we are into September and hopefully some cooler weather . Some days have just been miserable so I ’ m looking forward to some nice days in the 50-75 degree range . I think Vietnam messed up my thermostat . I really don ’ t feel chilly until it gets below 25 degrees and windy .

The kids are all back to school , and the sports continue . I encourage you to get out to watch some of the sports and see how much progress the kids make and how much fun they have . It ’ s not all about winning but the enjoyment of getting to play with your friends and schoolmates .

Congratulations to some local archers who competed at the annual shoot for the 4-H Archery Club . Gary Copeland put in a lot of time with the program . Ty Chase , was champion with sights . The reserve champion was Shealyn Bell . Matthew Walston was the traditional champion with Olivia Sams as the reserve champion .

Former Shiner runner and champion at many levels , Laura ( Schweitzer ) Haefeli was inducted into the Colorado Running Hall of Fame . If you lived in Rising Sun or this area for any period , you ’ ve heard of Laura and Ann , the Schweitzer Twins . Talk about determination and dedication . I can remember when Laura was going to an international competition in Germany back in 1991 . We held a fund raising run called On the Road to Germany to help with costs . Laura placed second in the world in the competition . The Schweitzer Family is a super family and was always there to support the College All American twins . Coach Shelia Wilson and Coach John Roeder Jr . flew to Colorado for the induction .

Drive around town and see some of the new sidewalks recently installed . Go to the riverfront and see all the beautiful improvements at the Veterans Tribute Tower . You can also purchase a brick to have installed at the tower to honor a veteran .

I was discharged from the

Army on August 29 , 1968 at Oakland , California where I had just returned from a year of duty with the 25th Infantry Division at Cu Chi , South Vietnam . I can ’ t believe it has been fifty years .

Please keep Alana Stegemiller , age eleven , in your prayers as she has gone through brain surgery and started Proton radiation therapy . This brave young lady has a long road to recovery and travels to Dayton , OH for treatments .

Happy Birthday to one of Ohio County ’ s sweetest ladies , Mavis Uhlmansiek . She turned 70 with a big surprise celebration Aug . 26 . Mavis always has a smile on her face .

The Rising Sun High School Marching Band has been practicing hard and getting ready for several competitions . Band director , Tyler Umpleby , has them ready for some outstanding shows , so try to get out and watch them in action .

I ’ ve been busy with more funeral details with the Color Guards in Southeastern Indiana . It ’ s such an honor to continue to pay a final respect to those who have faithfully served our

great nation .

I attended a Bowling for the Brave event at Colerain Bowl and watched as Dave Teke was honored as the Hometown Hero . He was presented with a Cincinnati Reds jersey with TEKE on the back of it . Dave and I grew up together . He has been very active in so many events for veterans over the years but has been slowed down by a stroke .

Dave still has the biggest heart and love for our veterans . The event was very emotional for him and his family .

Condolences to my daughter , Kelli Gentrup-Pettit , on the death of her husband ’ s mom , Martha Pettit . Kelli described her as the best mother-in-law a person could ask for . She passed away on Aug . 20 with her family by her side . Martha and husband , Don , were married for fifty-one years and may she rest in eternal peace .

I firmly believe that we have guardian angels looking out for us . I pray every day for those who have struggles and that God may bless them and ease their burdens . Be thankful and never miss an opportunity to tell someone you love them .

The Color Guard stood at attention during the Rededication Ceremony .

By Paul Gentrup The rededication of the Veterans Tribute Tower took place on Aug . 4 . This tower was originally dedicated back in Apr . 2008 .

A nice crowd attended the re-dedication including many American Patriots . This memorial means so much to so many . Take time to watch the flags flutter in the breeze , look at the different monuments , and read the names of the local people who died fighting for your freedoms . Read the names on the engraved bricks of those who served with pride to protect our great nation . Know what the Purple Heart monument means and how our brave soldiers shed their blood to wear that badge of honor . It ’ s a symbol of honor and pride . The Tribute Tower will stand long after these generations are gone . Hopefully many , many stories will be told on that river bank at that tower .

Our children and grandchildren should visit the monument and learn the meaning of FREEDOM . The men and women who so bravely serve are the backbone of our nation . So many unaccounted for are still on foreign soil and listed as Missing In Action . We must continue to pray for their return to America . We must never forget them or stop trying to account for them .

I hope that veterans will ask to be driven by this Tribute Tower on their ride to the cemetery for their final resting place and have them stop for a minute so that people can reflect about the True American Hero who has done his duty and done it well .
