Baseball is often referred to as America ’ s pastime and is a sport that many of us ( including myself ) have enjoyed playing or watching at some point in our lives . Many small towns have softball leagues including New Alsace . The North Dearborn American Legion Post 452 has hosted a softball league since the 1950s and many tri-state softball teams have enjoyed playing in this league throughout the years . Several players have even taken their passion for softball to a professional level , playing on the Team USA men ’ s softball team . This year ’ s New Alsace

Our condolences to the family of Raymond Schaefer . Ray passed away on August 18 at the age of 92 . He served in the US Navy during WWII and was a member of the North Dearborn American Legion Post 452 . Ray loved playing cards , listening to music and enjoyed sugar cookies and ice cream . He lived off North Dearborn Road and was often seen sitting on his front porch . I always checked to see if he was outside when I drove by to give him a friendly wave , which he always reciprocated . He leaves behind his children Russell ( Karen ) Schaefer of Sunman , Edna ( Jim ) Gilbert of Sunman , Linda ( Dave ) McDonald of Hilton Head , SC , and Mary Lou ( Ken ) Eckstein of Sunman . He had five grandchildren : Trisha Freyer , Trent Freyer , Tina Jenkins , Amanda Eckstein , Abbey ( Ben ) Bruner and 3 great-grandchildren . He also leaves behind his brothers Harry , Robert and Lester and sister Rosemary Conrad . Ray was preceded in death by his parents Bertha and Alfred Schaefer , wife Marie Schaefer and his siblings Joseph , John , Alfred , Elmer , Ralph , Bertha Mae , and Eugene .
A new school year is underway and for many young men and women , it ’ s a time to embark on a new journey : college ! Summer- where has it gone ? On one of the last weekends that the pool was opened , I decided to take a ride down the slide . I asked two girls around the age of 8 or 9 in front of me if they wanted to go first . They , in turn , said , “ No thanks . You can go first because we have never seen a grandmother go down the slide before .” One good thing about this scenario was that “ old ” was not mentioned at all- just grandma . Thanks to the Greendale Park board and Mayor Alan Weiss for making it possible for the pool to stay open on the weekends until Labor Day . Several of us wanted to get the last tanning in before winter .
