• Ray Knight then singles up the middle, scoring Strawberry from second.
MISTAKE: During the entire at-bat,
pitcher Roger Clemons never threw a high fast ball to Ray Knight (which he was susceptible to). On a 2-2 count, Clemons throws a curve ball middle of the plate breaking just above the knees. Knight hits a single up the middle scoring Strawberry.
Note: Two of these mistakes aren't errors but they still allow New York to
score a run. The official score book shows at this point a walk, stolen base, a
single and a run scored.
• Next Batter: Mookie Wilson. Wilson hits a ground ball single between 1st and 2nd
base. The ball rolled directly to Dwight Evans in right field but when the ball gets
to Evans, he bobbles the ball, falls to one knee allowing Ray Knight to advance
from 1st to 3rd thus the tying run is now on 3rd instead of being at 2nd.
MISTAKE: E9. If you watch the replay, you can see Evans “peek” to see where the
base runner is right before fielding the ball. That was his mistake. Especially since
Knight wasn’t considered a fast runner.
