SECTION UPDATE Women in the Profession Section By Heather Miller Carlock, Copeland & Stair, LLP [email protected] T he Women in the Profession (WIP) Section has gotten off to a great start this year. After the Board’s initial planning session in August, the Section looks forward to a busy 2014-2015 year. WIP began by holding a Kick-Off Social at Tin Lizzy’s in Midtown on September 16th. Over 35 members were present and we are pleased to report that several new members joined the Section. At the social, attendees received information about WIP’s partnership with Atlanta Legal Aid’s Cancer Legal Project. Information was also given about WIP’s support of ForeverFamily, an organization which provides support for children of incarcerated families. We are pleased to report that many members signed up for the upcoming Cancer Legal Training session, as well as for volunteer opportunities with ForeverFamily. WIP also kicked off the year by supporting the Atlanta Bar’s Legal Runaround, by not only sponsoring the event, but participating in the 5k held on September 13th. What a great event for a great cause! WIP was honored to take part. Slavery: Human Trafficking and Child Exploitation in Atlanta. The event took place at the Dekalb Courthouse, with insightful information and ideas offered by panelists Monica Khant, Lisa Williams, and Nekia Hackworth. WIP plans to continue its work with GABWA on this very important issue throughout the year. Be on the lookout for a January event. All upcoming events and activities can be found on our Section’s page on the Atlanta Bar website.
