n October 18, 2013, the Women in Profession Section (affectionately called “WIP”) received the Community Service Award at the annual Celebrating
Service Luncheon for its work with Foreverfamily. Foreverfamily was founded in 1987 to provide support to imprisoned
mothers, as well as the children and families left behind.
Initially, Foreverfamily focused more narrowly on providing
assistance to the incarcerated mothers; however, the mothers routinely asked for assistance for their children. Consequently, Foreverfamily changed its focus and expanded
its mission to serve the unique needs of children with incarcerated parents, as well. Today, Foreverfamily provides
a number of services to these children, including an afterschool program, where children can go for homework help
and a warm dinner. One night per month, Foreverfamily
has a birthday celebration for all children celebrating a birthday that month.
WIP’s partnership with Foreverfamily began during the 20122013 bar year. During that year, WIP provided tireless services
and commitment to Foreverfamily by consistently providing
meals for more than forty children who participate in the
after-school program, as well as supporting Foreverfamily’s
back-to-school drive and volunteering with the kids who are
a part of the program. Once a month, WIP volunteers visit
Foreverfamily to help prepare and serve dinner, dine with the
children, and celebrate that month’s birthdays. In addition to
volunteers, WIP also provides a birthday cake for this special
occasion. Many of WIP’s volunteers return the following
month to assist with dinner and form a relationship with the
children. The program has proven to be most rewarding for
WIP’s members and the children at Foreverfamily. WIP is
excited to continue our partnership with Foreverfamily during
the 2013-2014 year.
