SECTION UPDATE BANKRUPTCY 2017 Pro Bono Award Thanksgiving Volunteer Event The Bankruptcy Section is thrilled to announce that the Section was awarded the Atlanta Bar Association’s Pro Bono Award for 2017. The award was presented to the Section at the Atlanta Bar Association’s annual Celebrating Service Luncheon, held on October 20, 2017. This award recognizes the significant contributions made by the members of our Section to the provision of pro bono legal services from June 2016 through May of 2017. It is a well-deserved honor. On November 17th, approximately a dozen members of the bankruptcy section volunteered at the Children’s Restora- tion Network to assist with preparing Thanksgiving meal baskets for at-risk families. The event was coordinated by board member Howie Slomka. 2017 CARE Chapter of the Year The Bankruptcy Section is also pleased to announce that the Atlanta Chapter of CARE, which is coordinated by the Bankruptcy Section Board members Melissa Davey and CC Schnapp, has been named the CARE Chapter of the Year for 2017. CARE (which stands for Credit Abuse Resistance Educa- tion) is a program that provides financial literacy education to high school students. Many members of the Bankruptcy Section, including both attorneys and judges, volunteer to teach these financial literacy classes to Atlanta-area high school students. The award will be presented during the American Bankruptcy Institute’s Annual Winter Leadership Conference, set to be held November 30-December 1, 2017, in Palm Springs, California. Fall Social The Bankruptcy Section held its Annual Fall Social on Tues- day, October 24, 2017, at JCT Kitchen. Retiring Judge Ray Mullins, Judge of the Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Georgia, was honored at the event. The Fall Social was very well attended, with dozens of members joining to recognize Judge Mullins and his important contributions to bankruptcy practice and the Atlanta bankruptcy community. Save the Date Plea se save the dates for the following events. • The Bankruptcy and Commercial Law Year in Review CLE program will be held on Friday, January 26, 2018 at the Capital City Club Downtown. • The Bankruptcy Section 2018 David W. Pollard Award & Spring CLE Program will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2018. The event will take place at the Ansley Golf Club.
