SECTION UPDATE Litigation Section By Leigh May Butler Wooten & Fryhofer, LLP [email protected] T he Litigation Section has been off to a great start for this Bar year. Our signature events are our monthly breakfast meetings. On the second Friday of every month, the Litigation Section gathers at 7:30 am at the Ansley Golf Club for a buffet breakfast and a CLE program. We have an outstanding group of speakers scheduled for this Bar year. In September, we heard from David Walbert, and, in a meeting co-sponsored by the Judicial Section and the Gate City Bar, Chief Judge Phipps of the Georgia Court of Appeals spoke in October. We were very fortunate to have had both Judge Duffey (Northern District of Georgia) and Judge Tailor (State Court of Fulton County) on the agenda for our November 14th meeting. On December 12, we will hear from Randy Kessler on the subject of family law for lawyers who do not practice family law. This will be a joint meeting with the Small Firm and Solo Practitioner Section. We will continue the breakfast series through May. The Litigation Section is also proud of our relationship with the Truancy Intervention Project as our pro bono partner. We scheduled a training session in October and hope to plan another training in the spring. More information about the Truancy Intervention Project can be found at www.truancyproject.org. We would also like to thank our sponsors for their support of our Section and its activities. They are ATS (Applied Technology Services); Esquire Solutions; Habif, Arogeti & Wynne, LLP; JAMS; and The Partners Group. We also have several other events planned for this Bar year. In February, we will host Take Your Adversary to Lunch. This program encourages collegiality in the Bar by creating a chance for litigants to know their adversaries better and in a more informal setting. Participants will be eligible to win a Buckhead Life gift certificate. Other Section events include the Bench and Bar reception and the Meet the Judges luncheon. Both events will take place in the spring. We also have a CLE planned for the first of the year. As part of the Atlanta Bar Association’s law student outreach efforts, the Litigation Section has added law student board members from Emory University, Georgia State University, Atlanta’s John Marshall School of Law, Mercer and University of Georgia. We continue to offer free admission for all law students who wish to attend our functions. The Official News Publication of the Atlanta Bar Association November 2014 THE ATLANTA LAWYER 45
