On May 1, 2018, the Atlanta Bar
Association and the Superior
Court of Fulton County partnered
to host fifth grade students from
metro-Atlanta schools for Law
Day 2018. This year’s theme was
Separation of Powers: Frame-
work for Freedom. As the Host
of the Law Day Committee, Judge
Paige Reese Whitaker welcomed
the students and began the day.
The students heard speeches from
Mayor William Edwards (City of
South Fulton) as well as attorneys
Christopher Bruce and State Rep-
resentative Dar’shun Kendrick (D-
District 93) who gave a hands-on
demonstration of the legislative
process. Prior to the start of Law
Day, different schools submit-
ted various projects demonstrat-
ing their understanding of the
separation of powers, including
a music video of the Separated
Powers rap. The program was fol-
lowed by lunch and the students
went home with Law Day themed
bags. Planning for the Law Day
program began last year and was
made possible by a strong com-
mittee and generous donations
from the Atlanta Bar Association
and its sections.
