section update Estate Planning & Probate Section By Roger Kirschenbaum Roger Kirschenbaum, PC [email protected] T his will be my last report as Chairperson of the Estate Planning & Probate Section as the Bar year ends. The year truly has passed quickly; however, the Section packed a significant amount into the last 12 months. Let me cover April and May activities. April included our monthly breakfast with a presentation by Spalding Nix regarding the changing world of antiques and collectibles markets. To those of us who are ‘baby boomers’ our eyes were opened to the different ways millennials might look at our belongings and the expectations of our clients. The Section was also treated to our annual luncheon at Maggiano’s with Professor Mary Radford of Georgia State University presenting Recent Developments in Georgia Fiduciary Law. The final breakfast of the year brings Professor Radford back to speak as a jointly sponsored event of the Alternative Dispute Resolution and Estate Planning and Probate Sections regarding Arbitration and Mediation of Fiduciary Trusts and Estates Matters. the Probate Information Center for the Fulton County Probate Court, and also volunteer for the DeKalb County Probate Court Probate Information Center, so those that may not be able to afford an attorney have the ability to get counsel regarding estate matters. Having served on the Board, with one more year to go as Past Chair, it is satisfying to know that the Section has done these things year in and year out as a routine without fail. All this and it is fun to do it. Thanks to everyone who made this year a great experience. The Section achievements for the year in review are staggering thanks to the Board. Here is the list: - 11 Section breakfasts, each with outstanding speakers. - 2 Special luncheon speaker events. Professor Pennell (Emory) and Professor Radford (Ga. State) - Opening Reception host at The Fiduciary Law Institute in St. Simons - The 11th Annual Estate Planning Forum, sponsored by Diversified Trust, and hosted by the Tax Section and the Estate Planning Section - Social Mixer with the Tax Section, Elder Law Section and Financial Planners Association at Gordon Biersch - Dinner at the residence of Jackie and Murray Saylor for the Section’s Sponsors and Speakers - Membership of over 250 - 7 Dedicated Sponsors of the Section who help make all the activities possible Perhaps the aspect of the Section that makes me most proud is the dedication of the members to service in the community.
