The Atlanta Bar’s service is to three groups: our
clients, the justice system, and to other lawyers.
The Atlanta Bar Association helps us as we serve
our clients. From the Lawyer Referral and In-
formation Service’s work connecting potential
clients to lawyers who can help them solve their
problem to our CLE board’s innovative programs
that provide education to help lawyers hone
their skills, grow their practices, and better serve
their clients, we hope you will join us next year
as we work together to provide the best service
we can to our clients.
As to the justice system, the Atlanta Bar has been
a leader and the source of many firsts. From
the founding of the Atlanta Legal Aid Society,
the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation, the
Truancy Intervention Program and more, the
Atlanta Bar has helped create and grow organi-
zations serving the public.
Every year we recognize the pro bono and service
in which our members engage. This year, we
hope you will join us on October 19 for our an-
nual Celebrating Service Luncheon. In addition
to learning about the incredible service of our
members in the community, we are excited to
announce that Professor Lauren Sudeall Lucas
will be our featured speaker and will present on
the critical issue of access to justice.
Next spring, we will continue with the Atlanta
Bar’s Pro Bono March Madness. Throughout
the month, our legal services partners will pro-
vide training to equip us with the tools to help
those who need a lawyer. These programs offer
opportunities for every lawyer in every area of
practice. I hope you will identify an organiza-
tion with which to serve.
Finally, we serve our fellow lawyers. I know from
my current professional experience that there are
some exceptionally fine law schools in Georgia,
and especially so in Atlanta. I did not have the
pleasure of attending one of them. Beginning
law practice in Atlanta without a large network
of law school colleagues was intimidating. The
Atlanta Bar eased that transition. Through it I
have made lifelong friends. I have heard the same
from you, and I hope we are able to continue to
support and serve each other. Whether it is a
section event, our bocce or basketball leagues, or
attending our Reception About Nothing, join us
next year as we continue to build our community.
I am excited to focus this year on continuing our
legacy of service and I am grateful that so many
of you will be joining us in continuing to build
upon what we do so very well. To our officers,
board members, section chairs, and committee
leaders, you are talented and committed and I
thank you for your service. To our unmatched
staff and executive director, thank you for help-
ing us as we serve.
Thank you again for the honor and privilege to
serve as President of the Atlanta Bar Association.
I look forward to a year serving you.
One of my promises to you is to be brief and
to the point. As my first official act, I’d like to
formally adjourn our meeting. Thank you for
joining us and for your service to the profession.
