Carlock, Copeland & Stair JUSTICE NAHMIAS APPOINTED TO U.S. COMMITTEE ON CIVIL RULES Atlanta, December 5, 2012 – Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. of the United States Supreme Court has appointed Georgia Supreme Court Justice David E. Nahmias to the U.S. Judicial Conference Advisory Committee on Civil Rules. The Judicial Conference is the principal policymaking body for the administration of the federal courts. Its advisory committees on the federal appellate, bankruptcy, civil, criminal, and evidence rules review and recommend amendments to those rules, which apply to proceedings in federal courts and serve as a model for the similar rules of many states, including Georgia. The Advisory Committee on Civil Rules focuses on the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, on which Georgia’s Civil Practice Act, which governs civil proceedings in Georgia courts, is based. (Similarly, Georgia’s new Evidence Code, which will take effect on January 1, 2013, is based on the Federal Rules of Evidence.) Each advisory committee consists of federal judges, prominent lawyers and law professors, a U.S. Justice Department representative, and one state Supreme Court justice. Justice Nahmias will serve a three-year term. Justice Nahmias was appointed to the Supreme Court of Georgia in August 2009 by then-Gov. Sonny Perdue. He was elected in 2010 to a full six-year term. Prior to serving on the Court, he served as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia and as a senior U.S. Justice Department official, and he also worked as a law clerk for a federal judge and for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. “I am honored by this appointment and look forward to serving on this important committee, whose work has a direct impact on civil lawsuits in Georgia and across the country,” said Justice Nahmias. “I will look to Georgia lawyers for recommendations on how the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, and the state rules that mirror them, should be amended to reflect developments in legal practice.” 38 THE ATLANTA LAWYER December 2012 Carlock, Copeland & Stair congratulates William P.
