Czech Houses
Focused on family housing, the highlight of contemporary
Czech architecture, the exhibition presents 33 exceptional
designs by 33 architectural studios offering an insight
into contemporary Czech architecture and urbanism.
Showing a wide range of approaches to individual housing
needs including large and small houses; new projects and
renovations; houses in the countryside, in dense urban
centres and in suburbia; made of concrete, wood, bricks or
steel; in modern, abstract, or traditional styles distinctive,
subtle or introverted, the exhibition demonstrates the
continuous increase in the quality of Czech architecture since
the fall of Communism in 1989, capturing the developments
in architecture within the context of significant political and
social change.
Curators Ján Stempel, Jan Jakub Tesar a Ondrej Beneš
specialise in individual housing both in their architectural
and teaching practice at the Faculty of Architecture, Czech
Technical University, Prague. Their latest book Czech Houses
/ ceské domy (Kant, 2014) was instrumental in creating the
exhibition.

How hotel bathroom designs are missing
the mark
23
Arnold added, “When I am staying away
from home I want both ease of use and
accessibility. I don’t want to feel as if I
am at a hospital appointment as I have
enough of those. When I am away from home I want to relax
in nice surroundings both in public areas and my bedroom.
This research shows that we need a new era in the building
of accessible bedrooms otherwise we are laying up issues
that will be around for the next 10 to 20 years and then the
UK hotel economy will be unable to take advantage of the
huge market opportunity for accessible tourism that exists.”

Architectural glazing specialist, D
R Services, is well known for the
production and installation of glazed
balustrades. The company helps
architects and interior designers to
create visually dramatic staircases,
balconies, bridges and atrium elevations.
Director of D R Services, Julie Jarvis, comments: “As with
most of our work all of our glass balustrades are bespoke
to suit the customer’s requirements, though they tend to
feature 32 mm thick laminated glass with three sheets of
toughened glass and two interlayers.
“The glass itself is held in the plastic Iso-Shoe (spelling)
extrusion with a tapered aluminium wedge being used to
secure it - while this can be demounted again if required.
The shoe is normally covered by a brushed stainless steel
cap, but it can be cloaked with any metal, either coloured
or with an architectural finish. There is virtually no limit to
what we can offer customers in terms of glass balustrades.”
