Each clinical rotation will be a 6 week program, 2 full days a week where the UBCC student first has to qualify and then compete for the rotation. Acceptance will be based purely on clinical competency. The student will then work side-by-side with a team of neuroradiologists in the only level I trauma hospital in Suffolk County, New York, serving close to 1.5 million people. As a result, a broad cross spectrum of pathologies will be seen on a daily basis. These will consist of space occupying lesions ranging from tumors and infections to herniations and bone fragments. The neuroradiology department serves many local hospitals and outpatient facilities and functions 2417, 365 days a year. During the 6 week rotation, the UBCC student will be directly exposed to and trained on over 500 cases. The first 2 clinical rotations have been completed and was done by UBCC student's Rachel Perucci, Celeste Perot, Michael Ingui and Neal Patel and according to Dr. Peyster, they performed admirably. Dr. Peyster also commented, "I find it very easy to work with chiropractic students as their education and understanding of spinal anatomy makes teaching MRI interpretation very easy." He went on to comment that, "These students had an excellent education and were well prepared." According to Dr. Studin, "This type of collaboration with medical academia has been long overdue and sets the stage for many future programs, allowing chiropractic to flourish r~ M CM t$ ~ ~ ~ without having to compromise any core beliefs or teaching practices. It will also open many future doors for those students having undergone the clinical rotation once they graduate. No longer can a blanket statement be made that the chiropractor has inferior training to the allopathist in MRI. This is a very important first step and this type of program should be available at every chiropractic college. All it takes is time, hard work and a willingness to make it happen.
