Jane Adams

By: Lexi Burroughs

Yes, Jane Addams is a wonderful girl! I think that she happens to be more powerful than the president! This is because she cares about the poor, even though she is, or shall I say was, rich. I think that if Jane Addams was running for president, she would be a sure win. Jane Addams was the daughter of a prosperous miller and political leader. Her father served as a state senator for 18 years.

Jane Addams graduated from Rockford Female Seminary and was a valedictorian. She started to study medicine, but her health problem came back, and was hospitalized. She traveled, and when she was 28, took her second tour to Europe. She visited a settlement house, and that is what made her positive she wanted to open a similar house. She decided it would be for poor, under-privileged kids and families.

She went around, giving speeches about how poor the conditions were. To me this says that she was brave. Brave enough to go talk to rich families, telling them to donate to the poor. All of the rich people wanted nothing to do with the poor people. But Jane Addams was a well-to-do person herself, so she was making a big leap, just saying that. But being an advocate for the poor immigrants, and helping them find jobs! She seems like someone that she really could have gone far, if it weren’t for her health problems. Jane Addams is a great piece of American history, and she did get some recognition. She won a Nobel Peace Prize, but was hospitalized, so she couldn’t afford it. She deserves more though! The Hull House a blessing to immigrants, and will forever be in their hearts.
