like after a week or two. The animals pay the
highest price when no one will give them a
forever home.
So this month, in the spirit of Valentine’s Day,
share some love. Save a homeless animal.
Adopt a dog or cat from the shelter in your
area. (See the list accompanying this column.)
Many of them are having special adoption days
and are waiving the fee. That fee isn’t much to
begin with and may even be a tax deduction. It
does cover our medical tests and vaccinations,
vet care and the cost of neutering or spaying.
One event that I’m excited about is the Yappy
Dance, hosted by the Animal Friends of Port
Aransas for the benefit of the Port Aransas
Animal Shelter. It’s being held February 8,
2014 at the Community Center at 400 N. Alister St. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the event
begins at 7:30pm. There will be music for
listening and dancing by the Port A Rockers
from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. (My People say the Port
A Rockers are not to be missed!). Ticket price
is $30 or 2 for $50. Dinner is included in ticket price and you can purchase wine or beer
separately. It’s a great way to have fun while
helping the AFPA to help
the Animal Shelter to help
otherwise helpless animals.

Can’t give an animal a forever home yourself
because your landlord won’t allow it or maybe someone in your home has an allergy? You
can still share your love. Volunteer at a shelter.
Regardless of whether the shelter is publicly or
privately run, it relies on volunteer help. There
are lots of things you can do to help, like bathing the animals or just socializing with them
and you get to cuddle the kitties and puppies
and play with the cats and dogs. You say that
you have an allergy? Then make a donation.
Many organizations, like the Cattery in Corpus Christi, even have virtual adoptions. Your
donation supports the care of a specific shelter
animal. You get all the love with none of the
responsibility. None of the sneezes, either.
There’s nothing like the love of a pet. Who else
is going to rub up against you and look at you
with an expression that says you are the most
amazing being on the planet? It doesn’t matter
if you were late for class or work, forgot to pick
up the milk, cut someone off in traffic or otherwise had a bad day. We love you every day.
Come on, share some love. And Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us at Texas Now Magazine!
