Share The Love A Story By Scottie Fox
I’m continuing to enjoy and be grateful for my
Forever Home with my People and my adoptive
siblings. Shumba who is older than me by about
six months has taken to me like a real brother.
We groom each other and play and snuggled
together on the couch and he doesn’t even swat
me when I nose him out of his food bowl.
Even big-sister Sago has stopped growling
whenever I come into the room. She and I have
taken some nice long
chummy naps together
on winter afternoons. I
think she likes me and
just doesn’t want to admit
it.
This month my People
are celebrating Valentine’s
Day. This holiday is all
about LOVE. I can think
of no better way to share
the love than to adopt a homeless animal.
Sometimes we end up strays because we get separated from our families by accident, like Sago
and I were. Other times People have to give up
a pet because they’re too ill to take care of us or
have to move to a place that doesn’t allow pets.

One way or another we may end up at an animal
shelter. These are public facilities run by a government agency like a city or private ones run
by a chapter of an organization like the Humane
Society. Many not only provide a safe place to
stay and food to eat, but also other services like
keeping us clean and seeing that we get exercise. We get vaccinated against rabies and other diseases and protected from fleas, ticks and
other pests. We might
even get implanted with
a microchip so we can be
traced if we happen to get
lost. Some shelters even
do “temperament testing”
to make sure that we are
adoptable.
For a stray, being in a shelter is better than roaming
the streets trying to avoid
predators and find food like I had to before my
People took me in. To make room for strays,
some shelters have a “no kill” policy. That’s good
for us homeless pets but it means that when the
shelter is full it can’t help any more animals.
To make room for strays, other shelters will
euthanize those who have stayed too long,
