or those who love sun, sand and surf, nothing
compares to a sandcastle competition!! These
sandcastles will blow your mind! Some of the
brightest minds in the architectural community
in Houston will gather in Galveston on Saturday, May 30,
2015, and in only 5 hours will construct 60 of the most
mind boggling structures you’ve ever seen – out of
sand on the beach! And it’s a FREE event open to
the public!!
For over two decades teams of architects, designers, and
engineers have taken their tools to East Beach in Galveston
for one of the world’s largest sandcastle competitions. The
Houston Chapter of the American Institute of Architects
(AIA) has been hosting this competition since 1986.
Sixty participating teams will be competing for the
coveted Golden Bucket Award. The competition is the
culmination of months of preparation by participating
firms from concept to design to the teamwork
required to carry out the finished product on the
day of the event. Teams work non-stop for five
hours on event day, diligently sculpting sand
into wondrously detailed creations!
The contest is a fund-raising event for AIA
Houston and the Architecture Center of
Houston (ArCH) Foundation, as well
as one of the top events for the city of
Galveston. Judging is based on several
factors including originality of concept,
artistic execution, technical difficulty,
carving technique, and site utilization.
In addition to the Golden Bucket Award,
categories include Best Traditional,
That’s Entertainment, Most Complex,
Stars and Stripes, Best Architectural,
Most Hilarious, and Most Lifelike/
