Latina STEM Fellowship
The mission of the Latina STEM Fellowship is to support young women interested in STEM
through skill building, education and career planning, and mentorship.
This is the second year of the two week camp which included a Biotechnology track and an
Anatomy track. The ladies who participated were age 14-19 and attend public schools,
private schools, early college high schools, and community colleges.
During the camp, the ladies worked on learning lab skills such as streak plating,
microscopy, and dissection. They participated in field trips to Texas A&M University and
Texas Christian University where they learned about the research professors conduct,
took campus walking tours, visited residence halls, and ate at traditional dining halls with
university students who shared their collegiate experiences with the ladies. To begin
creating pathways to a career, the ladies took the MyPlan career test which assessed best
fit careers based on a series of four tests. The personalized results allowed the students to
further explore careers and plan an educational pathway that would lead them to that
career. In order to create the pathway, students researched the costs, degree plans,
and admission requirements of undergraduate and graduate programs.
The Latina STEM Fellowship Camp, which took place at Tarrant County College's Trinity
River Campus, was funded by the Governor's Summer Merit Program Grant. In order to
create a program beyond the two week camp, Lockheed Martin has provided funding for
a year round program. Applications will be available in early September.
