Teacher
Leadership
Teacher leadership is “…about mobilizing the still largely
untapped attributes of teachers to strengthen student
performance at the ground level and working toward real
collaboration, a locally tailored kind of shared leadership, in
the daily life of the school” (Task Force on Leadership, 2001). In
districts that promote teacher leadership for novice teachers,
there is an established leadership pathway for teachers, which
progresses from year one through year three and sets the stage
for life-long leadership.
Districts that build a
pathway for teacher leaders:
Cultivate Teacher
Leadership
Identify and Create Roles
and Opportunities
Communicate the Benefits
to Stakeholders
Center all Leadership on
Student Learning
“New teacher programs must
develop the capacity for novice
teachers to become leaders from
the first day of teaching and well
into their experienced years.”
-Moir and Gless, 2001
