NUTRITION IF YOUR BODY COULD TALK NUTRITION seasonal allergies, but by changing your diet you can rewrite that story. I see their excitement when they really begin to understand how much control they have and that’s my favorite part. PMAG: What do you wish more people kept in mind when it comes to food? P arvati Magazine interviewed holistic nutritionist Sara Best of If Your Body Could Talk. Parvati Magazine: What inspired you to get into holistic nutrition? Sara Best: From a very young age I was aware of the power of food to affect our overall health. Then, in my 20s I struggled with a lot of chronic digestion issues that doctors were never able to help with. In an effort to heal myself, I read every book I could get my hands on about natural and holistic wellness and managed to dramatically improve my own health. I eventually decided to return to school to get my diploma in Holistic Nutrition so that I could help others understand the connection between what we eat and how we feel and teach them how to use food and natural remedies to take control of their own health and wellbeing. PMAG: What is your favorite thing about working with clients? SB: I love helping my clients see that by changing what they eat and how they eat, they can control almost every aspect of their health including how much energy they have, how well they sleep, whether or not they struggle with seasonal allergies, how well they handle stress and how they age. Many people believe that it’s normal to feel tired all the time or sleep badly or suffer from SB: That foods are meant to be eaten in as close to their natural form as possible. An apple contains fiber, water, fructose and literally hundreds of enzymes, nutrients, phytonutrients and other elements that work synergistically together to allow your body to digest and absorb the nutrients it needs perfectly. Our current obsession with isolating macro nutrients (protein, carbohydrates and fat) has steered us away from this and created a food landscape packed with “food-like” prod ucts created in a science lab that are “lowcarb” or “high-protein” or “low-fat.” The result is poor health, weak digestion, nutrient deficiency and chronic obesity. PMAG: You’re running a 28-day program coming up called Fueling Greatness. What is it going to entail? SB: This is a 28-day group program that I run entirely online. It runs from September 14 to October 4 and is designed as a gentle detox, but also as a bit of a master class on the fundamentals of holistic nutrition and how to change your relationship with food. The program includes a detailed meal plan that is made up of whole, nutrient-dense foods - all the meals and snacks are gluten-free and plantbased; tons of delicious, easy-to-make recipes; access to a private Facebook group for lots of support and accountability along the way; and weekly teleseminars on different health topics such as mindful eating, optimal digestion and self-care. Learn more or sign up at www.ifyourbodycouldtalkblog.com/fuelinggreatness PMAG: What do you hope clients get out of it? SB: I hope the clients come away with a toolbox. My goal over the 28 days is to, not just tell them what to eat and what not to eat, but really help them understand the key principles of holistic nutrition. Everyone is different and I want them to leave with the ability to tune into the messages that their body is sending them about what they should be eating and when. And I want them to have some practical tools and strategies to help them shift negative patterns they may have around food and eating. My ultimate hope is that they leave my program feeling confident and empowered to start making better choices on their own.
