Economist Offers Provocative Solutions

“Economics permeates every aspect of our lives,”
said international economist and best-selling
author Dr. Dambisa Moyo, who offered several
provocative ideas to improve democracy and
fix income equality in her Thomas J. Volpe
Lecture Series speech. Her latest book is
Edge of Chaos: Why Democracy Is Failing to
Deliver Economic Growth—and How to Fix It.
Moyo, who has appeared on both the Time
100 Most Influential People in the World and
Oprah Winfrey’s Power List, said we are living
in a “flawed democracy.” Since only a fraction of eligible people vote, elected
officials cater to a small group and as a result many of their priorities are
short-sighted and have no regard for long-term consequences.
She proposed several
ideas to re-engage
people with the
democratic process,
including mandatory
voting, minimum voting
standards, and weighted
voting. While her ideas
may seem radical, Moyo
said every one of them
is now in use in some
part of the world.

to develop complicated solutions. The role of colleges is to produce graduates
who can work in teams, across cultures, and who speak multiple languages.

The Science of Love, Sex, and Intimacy

personality Dr. Pepper Schwartz
came to St. Francis College to
discuss “The Science of Love,
Sex, and Intimacy—and What
It Means for You.” She spoke
about who we are attracted to and
compatible with and why these
ideas are studied by biologists,
philosophers, psychologists,
sociologists, anthropologists,
and scores of poets and novelists.
Schwartz is a professor of sociology at the University of Washington and past
president of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexualities. Her most recent
books are 50 Great Myths of Human Sexuality and Snap Strategies for Couples:
40 Fast Fixes for Everyday Relationship Pitfalls.
The lecture was sponsored by the Self-Awareness and Bonding Lab, Academic
Dean’s Office, Center for Women’s and Gender Studies, Psychology Department,
and Sociology Department.

SFC Innovate Launches at Industry City

ith the launch of SFC Innovate, St. Francis College students now have the opportunity to intern with startup companies and network
with hundreds of companies based in Industry City. A partnership with Ikove Venture Partners, SFC Innovate is a new office dedicated
to enhancing co-curricular experiences and career exploration. The goal is to connect students to 21st century jobs and internships
by offering experiences in a variety of career fields—from management and accounting to communications and public service.
“St. Francis College has done an amazing job over the past few years
bringing professionals from all fields to our campus to train students how
to be successful in modern careers,” said Dr. Jennifer Lancaster, Vice
President for Academics and Academic Dean. “Now we’re going to the
center of an amazing small business hub, giving students access to new
and growing companies where they can put their skills to use.”
Industry City is a six million-square-foot mixed-use complex on the
waterfront in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The property’s ownership is cultivating
a vibrant and diverse community of forward-thinking companies. Ikove
Venture Partners is a venture development company founded to pursue
early stage investments with an emphasis on technology commercialization.
Over the past three years, Ikove has launched 10 technology companies
and created more than $100M in equity value through its Startup Nursery.
SFC Innovate will hire two new Entrepreneurs in Residence, serving as
liaisons between the college and the 450-plus businesses based at Industry
City. The Entrepreneurs in Residence will coach student entrepreneurs

and assist them in developing business skills, including leadership,
management, and communication. They will also work to forge relationships
between St. Francis and companies at Industry City.
Ikove’s newly launched FinTech (Financial Services Technology) Startup
Nursery will be based at SFC Innovate and Ikove will hire student interns
to help with business development.
“While there is little doubt our professors provide first-rate education
for SFC students, this partnership will place faculty and students alike in
an entrepreneurial eco-system that is second to none while also expanding
learning opportunities in very significant ways,” said St. Francis College
President Miguel Martinez-Saenz, Ph.D. “The collaboration with Ikove
will provide students with a first-hand look at the world of start-ups in ways
that are sure to transform their understanding of what is possible.”
