SFC Presents Vibrant Photo and Video Exhibition of South Africa

rom September 5th to December 1st, 2018, St. Francis College presented the photo and video exhibition “South Africa at Liberty:
Photographs and Videos by Yasser Booley” in the St. Francis Callahan Center Art Gallery. The exhibition was free and open to the
public. The show coincided with the book Yasser Booley: South Africa at Liberty, Collection Africalia Editions series.
Booley was an artist-in-residence at St. Francis College from September
5 –25. As he explored Brooklyn and the perceptions and realities of the
American dream, the artist added new work to his #easystreet project.
His residency included additional talks, working with students in the
classroom and on photography field trips, as well as workshops and active
engagement with faculty, staff, and community members.
At the opening reception on Sept. 10, Booley gave a talk in the College’s
Founders Hall titled, “Photography as Pedagogy: From Apartheid to Liberty?”
He sees photography as pedagogy, a way to start the learning process.
“South Africa at Liberty” was curated by art historian Janice Glowski. The
exhibition is described as a celebration and an indulgent vision of Booley’s
South Africa. The photographs spanned two decades and were taken from an
extensive body of work that begins on the eve of the abolition of apartheid.
“I am at the same time grateful, proud, and inspired to find myself hosted
by and working with St. Francis College and the big-hearted people who
believe in the power of inspiration,” said Booley. “I feel honored for being
able to present everyday South Africans to New York. This is, after all, where
the world meets.”
The images showed ordinary people at South Africa’s crossroads. Booley
brought to light the beauty of humanity through religious and cultural
differences, class and gender diversity, revealing his unbridled optimism,
often sprinkled with an accidental irony.

SFC Hosts 7th Annual Not-For-Profit Summit: Strategies for Growth

he St. Francis College Center for Entrepreneurship, Brooklyn Chamber
of Commerce, and Investors Bank hosted the 7th Annual Not-For-Profit
Summit: Strategies for Growth.
The Summit featured keynote speaker Charles Archer, Co-Founder and
CEO, the THRIVE Network. The panel discussion “Strategies for Growth”
was moderated by Deborah Schwartz, President of the Brooklyn Historical
Society. Panelists included Pamela Bennett, Director of Gift Planning for the
American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee; Thomas Flood, Vice President
for Advancement; and Martha Kamber, President and CEO of YWCA Brooklyn.
The Innovation Cornerstone Not-for-Profit Award was presented to
St. John’s Bread and Life, an organization that works to end hunger and
poverty in Brooklyn and Queens. The Emerging Not-for-Profit Award was
presented to Meet the Writers, an organization that connects schools with
diverse and dynamic children’s and young adult books.
Presentations also included “Take Charge of Your Social Media: Leveraging
Your Non-Profit’s Brand Online for Engagement and Growth.” ●
