Now, he’s back in Brooklyn Heights for the Dr. John Sexton Lecture Series, a new fundraiser for the College’s scholarship fund. Register now at sfc.edu/johnsexton. ● Maud Casey Walks Away With $50,000 Literary Prize Maud Casey’s novel, The Man Who Walked Away, topped more than 130 other mid-career works to earn her the St. Francis College $50,000 Literary Prize, one of the richest book prizes in the nation. Casey’s win was announced during the opening gala for the 10th Annual Brooklyn Book Festival. She is the fourth winner of the prize. Maud Casey signed books at “Casey’s writing struck us for the quality of the Brooklyn Book Festival. its sentences, by turns lyrical and hardnosed, the depth of its research, and its subtly intricate structure,” said author Daniel Torday (The Last Flight of Poxl West), one of the three jurors for the 2015 prize. The Literary Prize mission is to support mid-career writers who don’t often receive the support they need to write. Winners of the prize submit a third to fifth work of fiction published within a two-year window. The next prize will be awarded for a work published between June 2015 and May 2017. The other authors on the shortlist were Paul Beatty, The Sellout, Stuart Dybek, Paper Lantern, David Gilbert, & Sons, Marlon James, A Brief History of Seven Killings, and René Steinke, Friendswood. The authors spoke at a panel at the book festi val. Jones and Beatty both later returned to St. Francis for separate events as part of the Walt Whitman Writers Series. Joseph Michael McShane, SJ (President, Fordham University). Macchiarola Archive Unveiled On what would have been his 75th birthday, St. Francis College unveiled the President Frank J. Macchiarola Digital Archive. “FJM’s daily life, and certainly his writings, give shape to Francis’ proscription, ‘Practice the gospel always, use words if necessary’,” said Dr. Macchiarola’s son, Michael Macchiarola, as he laid out the lessons that can be learned by examining his father’s writing. It took about three weeks for Data Conversion Laboratory (DCL) to scan and organize thousands of documents; 38 years’ worth of photos, law review articles, essays, news clips, and books written by and about Dr. Macchiarola. The archive is a visual and written history of Dr. Macchiarola’s life and accomplishments, from when he graduated from St. Francis in 1962 to his return as President in 199 6. It includes his time as New York City Schools Chancellor, Dean of Cardozo Law School, Chair of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s New York City Charter Revision Program, member of Gov. George Pataki’s New York State Commission on Education Reform and much more. In attendance at the unveiling were a number of Dr. Macchiarola’s family including his wife Mary, sons Michael and Joseph, brother Henry, and sister-inlaw Susan. Eda is an entrepreneur herself, with more than 20 years of Eda Sanchez-Persampieri. Walt Pearson ’83. experience in the apparel industry. Among her accomplishments, she launched three lifestyle brands. She frequently mentors small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs to build and scale their concepts into profitable and sustainable businesses.
