Terrier Volume 80, Number 1 - Fall 2016 | Page 3

Message from President Brendan J. Dugan ’68 Some of our Peer Leaders getting ready to welcome the newest Terriers: Sook Poras ’18, Sher Sodoysodoy ’18, Anthony Agosto ’17, Ashley DeMaria ’17, Miasia Kinloch ’19, Kurt Dee ’17, Arianna Sartzetakis ’19 and, Hannah Seymour ’18. In addition to helping with Freshman Orientation, these students also take part in SFC 1001, helping new students with the transition to college. As our students, faculty, and staff return to St. Francis College this fall, we are also graced with the return of Dr. John Sexton. Dr. Sexton began his career in higher education as a professor and chair of our Religious Studies Department. Many of you may know him for his time as President of NYU. Now we are pleased that he is coming home to Brooklyn Heights for a lecture series on religion, government, and baseball. The six-part series is a donation of Dr. Sexton’s time and expertise to raise money for scholarships. We hope many of you will register to attend and help Professor Sexton feel at home again (page 2). Also in this issue you’ll learn about alumni who are bringing books to underserved children (page 8), helping female ex-offenders work their way back into society (page 16), and one alumna who is living large (page 20). Mets owner Fred Wilpon is not a St. Francis alumnus but his generosity in founding the Robert J. McGuire Scholarship shows that he is a firm believer in our Franciscan ideals of helping others. Through a matching grant, Mr. Wilpon is building a community of 60 students who otherwise could not afford a quality, private college education (page 3). That Franciscan Tradition is alive and well at St. Francis. Beginning Thursday, Sept. 29, we start our annual celebration, St. Clare and St. Francis Week. This year’s events will feature a celebration of the “Transitus,” a commemoration of the passing of St. Francis. The week concludes with the Blessing of the Animals, always a popular event. We invite you to attend any and all of these events. Find out more at sfc.edu/clareandfrancis. We hope many of you will make this year the one where you also return to St. Francis College. Brendan J.
