Joseph Taylor Skerrett ’ 64
Writing was always a big part of Joseph T . Skerrett ’ s life . As a student , he was editor of the College ’ s literary magazine and contributed to the newspaper . He graduated with a Bachelor ’ s Degree in English then returned more than 30 years later to be awarded an Honorary Doctor of Literature at the 19 98 commencement .
During the time between , Skerrett earned a Master ’ s Degree from John Hopkins
University in its Creative Writing program and a Ph . D . from Yale University , specializing in 20th century African-American literature . He was Professor Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Amherst after teaching in the English Department for more than 35 years . Skerrett also served as past president of the academic society MELUS ( Multi-Ethnic Literature of the United States ) and was the author of Literature , Race , and Ethnicity : Contesting American Identities . ●
