BRITTANY MOLINDER CATERING & EVENT MANAGER, CLABBER GIRL BLOGGER, ALWAYS TAKE THE SCENIC ROUTE H ow did you start working in the food space? I have always been a picky eater, and growing up I survived on pasta, fruit, bread, and peanut butter and jelly sandwich- es. I started experimenting with the different ways I could prepare my favorite items to make them different (grilled PB&J instead of grilled cheese, different non-traditional pastas, etc.). This got me started on re-imagining foods in a different way before I even became interested in the industry. When I was 18 years old, I was living in Florida for the summer, pursuing a career in graphic design. I was kind of forced to try sushi for the first time one night and I fell in love with it. It seems like something so insignificant, but it was the turning point for my relationship with food. I started trying new foods I didn’t think I would like, retrying foods I thought I hated, and teaching myself how to cook all these foods. I changed ca- reer directions and commuted to Indianapolis for culinary school. I was then offered an internship position at Clabber Girl teaching cooking classes, and that internship became a job offer to be the catering chef. What do you enjoy about your work? Whether at Clabber Girl or with Always Take the Scenic Route, each day is different. My favorite thing about the food in- dustry is that it’s constantly changing, always evolving. Between working in the kitchen with other chefs and ex- ploring new places and cuisines, I am constantly discovering and learning new things I get to share with others. Is it easy or hard to be in the food industry in Terre Haute? I think it can be difficult. I was fortunate to find the job that I did, and to be able to grow within the company. But as our local food industry grows, I think it will get better for more chefs, foodies, and restaurateurs, to find their voice locally. Who has been a strong role model for you with respect to your work in food? While both my parents are extremely supportive and are heavily involved in my food passions, my dad really has been the one that has encouraged my food experiments from a young age and “geeks” out in the kitchen with me to this day. What is your favorite food? I love anything appetizer! I don’t know what it is about them, but they are my go-to item that I love to make and eat. Come visit our new location!
