FEATURES Growing Initiative Nonprofit becomes platform to showcase Terre Haute’s assets T Travis Beckner curates a section of terrehaute.com, daily updating the site’s Community Events Calendar and Showcase. erre Haute tends to be a well-kept secret in the Midwest. With a continuously growing downtown business front, engag- ing restaurant and event venues, a plethora of youth-centered nonprofit organizations, and so much more, this small town often becomes a pit stop for I-70 travel- ers who leave none the wiser. Haute Initiative founder Mark Gibson saw the potential in the town, if only there was a little effort put into marketing. When he completed his project, “The Story of Terre Haute” documentary, he noticed the city rise to fame and hit the skids shortly after. “We wanted to see how we could help,” Gibson said, referring to his team at Envisionary Media. “One of the things I thought was, we don’t promote ourselves. We have assets and resources of pride that big cities do on a smaller scale and I didn’t see anybody promot- ing that.” WORDS: ERIN GREGORY PHOTOGRAPHY: MICHAEL GREGORY 40 Terre Haute Living • August 2018 tribstar.com/terrehauteliving
