special training respondents have received is concerned, this is depicted in figure 2
below (see appendix IV, pp. 111-112, tables 5-10).

Figure 2. The kind of special training respondents have received
As it is shown in figure 2, there are no respondents who hold a postgraduate
degree in the area of TESOL, while four of them (11%) are currently studying at
postgraduate level with the Hellenic Open University (HOU) (see appendix IV, p.
111, tables 6-7). However, as no relevant question was included in the questionnaire,
there is no information available concerning the level of progress of theses
postgraduate students and, therefore, the degree to which their answers have been
influenced by their studies cannot be judged. As far as whether respondents have
attended a special course on how to teach Young learners as part of their studies for
the ‘English Philology’ degree, it is worth noting that only 11 teachers (30%)
provided a positive answer (see appendix IV, p. 111, table 7). This can be explained
by the fact that the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which is the institution where
most of the respondents graduated from, offers the course only as an elective (for the
courses offered by the Aristotle University see appendix V, p. 132), while the
University of Athens does not offer such a course at all (for the courses offered by the
University of Athens, see appendix VI, p. 135).
As we move from long- to short-term training, we find a larger percentage of
respondents (41%) who have attended training courses (see appendix IV, p. 111, table
7), and an even larger one (68%) who have attended one- or two-days seminars (see
appendix IV, p. 111, table 8). Concerning training courses, most respondents stated
that they have received initial training at the Regional Educational Centres (known by
