February is the shortest in
the year yet it has a number
of historically rich happenings and
important events. Let us take a look
at what the month of February has to
offer.
Thomas More was born in London,
England February 7, 1478. He was a
lawyer, scholar, and held the title Lord
Chancellor of England. As a devout
Catholic, he refused to acknowledge
the divorce of King Henry VIII from
Queen Catherine, thereby refusing
to acknowledge the King’s religious
supremacy. He was charged with
treason, found guilty and beheaded in
1535. Four hundred years later, Pope
Pius XI canonized Thomas More in
1935.
British novelist Charles Dickens
was born on February 7, 1812 in
Portsmouth, England. His works
include David Copperfield, Oliver
Twist, and Nicholas Nickleby. In 1843,
he wrote the popular A Christmas
Carol in just a few weeks.
American inventor Thomas Edison
was born in Milan, Ohio on February
11, 1847. Throughout his lifetime he
acquired over 1,200 patents [
