History is made with Documents

This first number of the magazine TAVILLA looks at aspects of the History of Tavira in the 15th and 16th centuries. This is an edition prepared by the students of Languages and Humanities Course, attending the 11th grade, C1 class, under the subject of History, for the European Erasmus + Programme, Connect Your Learning project, in partnership with the ESJAC Library. It intends to be a project with different characteristics, on local history, always starting from the sources, and without losing the references and its integration in our National History.

The 15th and 16th centuries were, in fact, a period of great growth and strategic importance of the city of Tavira, hence we have taken the option for this period. It was, however, in the second half of 15th century that the pirates’ attacks began on the Algarve coast, responsible, among others, for the decadence of the city, in particular, and for the ruralisation of the Algarve, in general.

It was on these topics that the students’ attention was focused on, on a reality that, although, in a distant time, is close to them, in an initiation into how History is reconstructed from the sources.
