The CDAS species conservation program was opened up for discussion at an open
committee meeting which was held on the 4th of May.
After getting some valuable input from the members who chose to attend, the conservation species list has grown and hopefully become more dynamic.
After the successes of the endler guppies and celestial danio we have decided to
downgrade the celestial danio to a level 2 species and just keep track of the endlers
as a historical success.
We have decided to move the current level 1 Pseudomugil ivantsoffi (Ivantsoff Blueeye) and Chlamydogobius squamigenus (Edgbaston Goby) up to level 3, due to
their scarcity. These have replaced with the red finned mccullochi, the honey blue
eye and desert goby. This is a good outcome as these fish, while not rare, are not
common in Canberra.
While we would like the conservation program to be really dynamic, the committee
is also mindful that we should concentrate on only a few species at a time (as indicated above with the next lot of natives that are coming in) instead of having one
gigantic wish list. Then, as with the endlers, we can move on to others on the current list once a reasonable population\distribution is well established.
It is starting to turn into a complex program but the committee (and the members
who attended the committee meeting) believe it very a worthwhile one.
