grew noticably. The Archive Library’s activities were ended
in January 1949 by a decision of the Committee of Cultural
Educational Institutions. In November of the same year
22,973 books and 3815 pieces of sheet music were removed
from the Central Library’s Estonian department to the the
State Library. In December the library’s director Aleksander
Sibul handed over to the director of the State Library 8890
books which had appeared mainly during the period of
independence.
In summary on the information of the Central Library
74, 721 books were expunged between 1945 and 1949. The
State Library’s collection grew in 1949 by 119,020 books,
of which 70,661 had come from other institutions.
