Star Story

For this 'Green' issue, we've fallen in love with Natalie Baker's short story - 'Gooseberry'; here's why it was our Star Story for Synaesthesia this month:

"Some found us by accident.... Others were strays, vagabonds and lost folk who had left their loved ones behind or their loved ones had left them."

Drenched in a simplistically modern poetic prowess, and salaciously fruity (bringing to mind Christina Rossetti's 'Goblin Market'), 'Gooseberry' delights, surprises and leaves its reader thirsty for the hidden story between the lines.

We have chosen 'Gooseberry' for its compelling storyline; twisted, yet oozing with poetic prose, Baker successfully captures the lusting relationship between Jasper and our anonymous narrator through the simple metaphor of the gooseberry, woven in like a leit-motif.
