We absolutely adore your short story 'And It Can Never Be Too Dark or Too Bright' – where do you get your inspiration from?
Thank you! For that story in particular, I was reading a lot of Pam Houston and Lorrie Moore and wanted to write something that made me feel the same way I felt when I read their stories. That was my attempt when I began it. Also there is a song called "D&P Blues" by this lovely little band called Uncle Earl and in it, the girl sings about having one man in Kentucky and one man in Tennessee and then she sings "And if I'm lucky they both think they got me." I loved that! So cute!
When I was finished writing the story, it felt like something new and different. I love writing about women in love with two different men. It's kind of a running theme in a lot of my work although I've never experienced it myself (unless celebrity crushes count!) But in that story, I wanted to write about a woman who loved two men...equally at first...but then it shifts. One is clearly the winner.
In general, I get my inspiration from all sorts of places. Even the tiniest things. I'm almost always working on a story/character idea in my brain. I know they're really good when they keep me up at night—when I almost feel kinda “crazy” because I can't stop thinking about them. JACKPOT!
