Swing the Fly Issue 3.1 Summer 2015 | Page 83

Actually, when I wrote Bluewater Fly Fishing, I didn’t have the money either. I just got lucky. Everything just fell into place. I missed a flight out of the jungle in Columbia and there were two crazy French guys that went into the airport to hang out for a while. I was down there to check out a lodge for Frontiers Angling. I ended up in the first tournament on the West Coast of Columbia just by chance! These two French guys went by boat and jeep to the airport with me. They said they were going to make a movie in Senegal about Atlantic Sailfish and asked me along, saying they would pay for everything. Air France covered my airfare, and that kind of started it all. Just in the right place at the right time.

But on the steelhead rivers, I was usually fishing on my own. Bob York was a good fisherman. Jimmy Hunnycut, I met down there on the Quinnalt; he is a great angler. Some of the guys featured in Steelhead Fly Fishing were really fine anglers. But you know the really good anglers are usually good on any river and they are really good on the rivers they frequent regularly.
