If you have created a good Set up stroke and had enough line speed to feed the slack before the D-loop stroke starts, you should have your two hands close together during most of the D-loop stroke. The rod (and hand) speed during the D-loop stroke will mean the excess fly line will flap behind the hands, but the line between the two hands must be taut.
