Swing the Fly Issue 2.2 Fall 2014 | Page 36

bank with no success, not even one strike. For some people it can be very disappointing to not catch fish, but for me it was a great day on the river. I calculate it is like 1,989 times better than a day in any office! The company was great, the place beautiful, and we ate a barbeque!

When I go fishing the only thing I’m sure about the day is that I’ll enjoy it. I also was learning a lot, asking the guide about knots, flies, the bait fish, the behavior of the Dorados, etc.

The third day we started with the same luck, it was windy so we couldn´t get to the main river. Approaching noon the wind started to calm down, and we finally went to the Paraná. That was another game, the water was very fast in some banks, lots of trees and the casting skills were much more important.

We were casting to the banks, as close as we could, and moving the fly with short and fast strips. I lost the first strike because I couldn’t get the rod down. The Dorado has a strong mouth and big teeth, so if you don’t set the hook properly; the chances of landing a Dorado are small.
