5. Carefully wrap the herl forward toward the eye of the hook. 3 or 4 wraps should do it. Figure 5 shows the beginning of these wraps.

6. After 3 or 4 wraps, tie off the herl on the bottom of the hook. Advance your thread toward the eye of the hook to clean up the butt ends. Cut the waste herl at the return of the hook.

7. Figure 7 shows the thread advanced toward the eye. Don't worry about the stray fibers adjacent to the butt. We will cover those with the next pass of thread.

At this point, a smooth underbody is desired. With a flattened thread (Bobbin spun counter clockwise), carefully lay a smooth foundation of thread. You can burnish this thread with a burnishing tool if you wish. I often will use the back of my fingernail to gently burnish materials.
