8:30am departure, which was reasonable
although our photos may show other
travellers in them.
KayTours picked us up at Thompson
Beach House exactly when they said
they would. The vehicle was spacious
and clean, and KayTours even had a
multitude of drinks and snacks for us,
from water, soda and beer to chips, nuts
and other packaged snacks to fresh fruit!
I knew right away that we made the
correct choice to partner with KayTours.
A little less than two hours driving from
Playa del Carmen and we arrive at Ek’
Balam, which is situated in the Northern
Maya Lowlands about 56kms northeast
of Chichen Itza. The site, which amaz-
ingly enough was once a cattle farm, is
nothing short of spectacular. One thing
that sets Ek’ Balam apart from other
mayan ruins is the incredible preserva-
tion of the plaster on the tomb of Ukit
Kan Lek Tok', a Mayan King buried
inside the largest pyramid. Marten, our
personal guide, spends time explaining
history and structure in a most fascinating
way and I believe he may be a retired
