OTIS CAREY AND SUMMER SIMON CLAIM AUSTRALIAN INDIGENOUS SURFING TITLES O tis Carey (Coffs Harbour, NSW) has claimed his second Open Men Australian Indigenous Surf- ing Title and Summer Simon (Port Kembla) has claime d her third Open Women title at Bells Beach on the traditional land of the Wada Wurrung people. “It’s cool to win the event again, but for me the biggest thing is just being here at the event and having that sense of belonging to the community,” said Carey. “I am just overwhelmed with the win,” said an elated Si- mon. “To get my highest ever heat total here in some great waves at Bells Beach is incredible.” Other winners at the event included Finn Hill (Avoca, NSW), Robbie Page (Kempsey, NSW) and Tom Avery (Lismore, NSW). The Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles is presented by VicHealth, the Victorian Government, Corangamite CMA, Headsox, Surfing Australia, Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-Op and Surfing Victoria. PROFESSIONAL SURFING HEADS BACK TO PHILLIP ISLAND WITH NEW WSL QS1000. THE Bass Coast Shire have committed to profes- sional surfing with the announcement of the Phillip Island Pro QS1000 event this October. To be held from October 27 to 31 on Phillip Island, the event will feature a 1000 rated World Surf League Qualifying Series (QS) event alongside the Phillip Island Junior Challenge and Indigenous Invitational. Surfing Victoria CEO Adam Robertson is excited to bring a QS event back to Victoria. “I am delighted that Surfing Victoria, the Bass Coast Shire and World Surf League are able to bring a QS event back to Victoria and particularly to Phillip Island which has some of the best waves in the State. “The QS is the stepping stone to the World Tour and pro- vides junior surfers with some great experience against older surfers.” The primary location for the event will be the world class beach break Cape Woolamai with back up options being Flynns Reef, Penguin Parade, Right Point, Smiths Beach and Surfies Point. surfingaustralia.com | 079
