even new national champions were crowned after a first class day of competition at the nudie Australian
Adaptive Surfing Titles held at Kingscliff on the Tweed Coast on June 25th.
Small but clean conditions allowed the field of twenty two adaptive athletes to showcase their ability,
including a historic first ever women’s heat.
A field of big names in the world of adaptive surfing
including dual International Surfing Association (ISA) World
Adaptive Champion Mark ‘Mono’ Stewart, Barney Miller, Jade
‘Red’ Wheatley and Dave Munk joined new faces like Paul Lee
and Ben Hurrell in the water for a day of great moments.
One such moment was in an inspirational AS6 Visually
Impaired division Final where Kirk Watson and Matt Formston
put on an amazing display as a northerly wind crept up after
lunch. Formston will travel to the USA to compete for a world
title again later in the year after winning the final.
Watson's amazing trust and commitment during the final
winning him the nudie Spirit of Adaptive Award.
Barney Miller, who didn’t stop smiling all day, took victory in
the AS5 Assist division as the tide bottomed out, making for
tricky conditions.
“Surfing means everything to me, it’s such a good event
and in the end everyone here today is a winner,” said Miller.

‘Mono’ Stewart needed all his competitive experience to
overcome a strong field in the AS2 final with wave selection
really becoming critical. Stewart defeated fellow seasoned
ISA competitor Jade Wheatley (2nd), Steven Lovell (3rd) and
Ben Tirabosco (4th).
Further bolstering the growth of the event, Nortec came on
board as a new support sponsor of the 2017 nudie Australia
Adaptive Surfing Titles.
Results from competition serve as a springboard for selection
in Team Australia to compete at the International Surfing
Association (ISA) World Adaptive Surfing Championships
later in 2017.
