Wrice, with the better wave selection the difference, won a hotly contested affair. Hometown hero and eventual series winner Reef Heazlewood took his strong form to the next level on the Sunshine Coast to pip Sandon Whittaker in his second final appearance in as many events. Kobie Enright and good mate Macy Callaghan were the two best athletes in the draw for both Sunshine and Gold Coast events and deservedly met in both finals and finished with a win apiece. After the final hooter at Duranbah Beach, the series crowned its youngest ever female champion in 13-year-old Zahli Kelly and three-event winner Reef Heazle- wood on the men’s side of the draw. The two proud Queenslanders couldn’t have been happier. “It was my main goal this year and it feels great to achieve that,” said Heazle- wood. “It was a bummer to get knocked in the second round here but overall I’m happy with my performance this year. “The Subway Surf Series is amazing. It’s so good for the juniors to get that ex- perience of surfing back-to-back events and aiming for a title while travelling to different locations. It’s great preparation for the Qualifying Series and beyond. It’s been a great 2017 so far, I’m over the moon.” Despite not making the final on the Gold Coast, Kelly was over the moon with her status as series champ. “It would have been nice to make the final but to win the JQS is amazing. I defi- nitely didn’t expect to take it out this year. I’m really excited to head to the WJC, I never thought it would be something I’d achieve this year,” said Kelly.
