The Elcometer 500 Coating Thickness Gauges accurately measures the thickness of coatings on concrete and other similar substrates using a non-destructive ultrasonic time-of-flight technique. The gauge is both fast and accurate and will take dry film measurements of coatings on concrete up to 10mm thick. The Elcometer 500 is available as either a Basic version or a Top version with different firmware options. The gauge uses an ultrasonic transducer to send pulses of ultrasound energy through the coating, which are reflected by the coating/ concrete interface. The return pulses are detected and the time taken for the pulse to pass through the coating and back to the transducer is measured, (time-of-flight). The gauge divides the time by two to establish the time for the pulse to pass one way through the coating and then this value in seconds is multiplied by the velocity of sound in the coating (m/s) to display the coating thickness. The built-in signal strength indicator on the gauge prevents false or incorrect readings, as the gauge only displays the coating thickness measurement if the signal strength indicator goes green.
