ELECTROPLATING, ANODISING & GALVANIZING Galvanizing project key to airport development A partnership between two Scottish fi rms has helped to lay the foundations for the growth of one of Britain’s busiest airports. Scottish Galvanizers Ltd was called upon by structural steelwork fabricator and long-standing customer BHC Ltd to process more than 334 tonnes of hot-rolled steel consisting of approximately 924 separate pieces, used as part of the multi-million development at Glasgow Airport. Enhanced pick-up and drop-off points, as well as a newly-extended car park designed to better meet the growing number of passengers, were opened to the public earlier this year. Bryan Cathcart, Managing Director of BHC Ltd, explained: “We’re pleased to see the completed works helping to ease congestion at the airport and providing a better experience for everyone who uses it. “Hot dip galvanizing is one of the best steel finishes we can use on structural builds as all surfaces of the steel are immersed in molten zinc, giving it thorough and long-lasting protection which can withstand the elements and prevent corrosion. “We’re based in Carnwath, South Lanarkshire, close to Scottish Galvanizers in Glasgow, which is ideal for large projects such as this. “Over the years, they’ve become a key supplier of ours due to their reliability and capability, having the biggest galvanizing bath in Scotland, and this has seen us work together across industries as diverse as agriculture, education, industrial, and oil and gas.” The investment represents one of the most significant upgrades to Glasgow Airport’s infrastructure in over 10 years, and has addressed the issue of congestion by creating provision for expected growth in passengers. Paul Tait, Commercial Manager at Scottish Galvanizers, added: “While the volume of steel was an average amount, the challenging part of this project was 38 the number of constituents required for the works, totalling almost 1,000 separate pieces of galvanized steel. “We’re delighted that the project was a success and look forward to working together with the BHC team again in the future.” Wedge Group Galvanizing is the largest hot-dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years. With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, the firm offers a truly national galvanizing service.
