THE GALVANIZERS ASSOCIATION The Galvanizers Association Corrosion is a naturally occurring phenomenon, affecting all forms of industry from infrastructure, utilities and transport to manufacturing. NACE International, one of the world’s leading authorities on corrosion engineering and control, puts the corrosion costs for an industrial economy at 3.1% of GDP. If indirect costs are taken into account this figure rises to 6.2% of GDP. It is estimated that the total cost of corrosion in 2015 for the USA was over $1 trillion. But what is best practice when it comes to corrosion prevention and what lessons are being learned? Firstly it must be stated that there are a number of options when it comes to corrosion protection, however the 250 year old process of galvanizing remains one of the most cost effective and flexible forms of anti-corrosion available. Its performance can be accurately predicted and it offers a robust coating that is metallurgically bonded to the steel. Spearheaded by its industry body, Galvanizers Association (GA), the UK and Irish galvanizing industries are highlighting the important role that steel continues to play in today’s society as long as it is correctly protected. GA acts as a conduit for training, information and advice throughout all stages of the engineering process whether domestic or international. As performance prediction requires a detailed understanding of both the process and the site environment, this type of support can greatly enhance the resulting performance, wherever the installation. Efficiencies have been introduced to make today’s galvanizing plants unrecognisable from those of even 20 years ago. Computer controlled heating systems and heat 16 SHOW GUIDE - AUGUST 2018 recycling within the process save valuable energy, improving not only value for money but carbon-footprint also. Automated handling and recycling of zinc at plants are just some of the other developments that speed up the process and optimize resources. The speed of the process is also a major advantage. Unlike the application of many other coatings, conditions such as temperature, humidity and air quality do not affect the quality of the galvanized coating. The entire process can take less than one hour, with the result that galvanizers today can offer a 24hr turnaround for the processing of batches of steel. When it comes to product efficiency, the lifespan or longevity of the galvanized coating gives a leading advantage, in that it provides significantly longer life to first maintenance than alternatives while costing the same or less on day one. These are the kind of considerations that come into play when we look at tackling corrosion as a global issue.
