“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always
comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even
breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The
journey changes you; it should change
you. It leaves marks on your memory, on
your consciousness, on your heart, and
on your body. You take something with
you. Hopefully, you leave something good
behind.” – Anthony Bourdain (1956 – 2018).
My first journey to Portugal certainly
changed me. I fell in love with the culture,
the food and Fado, traditional Portuguese
folk music – it’s soulful and mournful with
sad lyrics. Amalia Rodriques, known as the
Queen of Fado, sold more than 30 million
records by the time she died in 1999.
She remains the best-selling Portuguese
artist in history. Discover this magical
destination with Costsaver (see page 6).
Ami Kapilevich’s memories of making
the most of a disastrous camping trip
(page 14) takes me back to my own USA
camping experience during the late 1980s.
I wasn’t sure about “trekking across
America”, but was finally convinced to
join a group of friends. It didn’t start off
well; I had to get used to the discomfort,

travelling endless miles and pitching
tents. But once I had acclimatised and
became a tent-pitching expert, I loved
the experience of being on the road and
sleeping under the stars.
A visit to the remote islands of
St Helena is now possible by air, with
SA Airlink operating flights between
St Helena Airport and O.R Tambo
International Airport. Richard Holmes
hopped on one of the first flights and
brought back the story of this remote
island on page 48. Equally remote
Ascension Island has now also become
accessible by air, with SA Airlink operating
a charter service on the second Saturday
of each month.
Discover South Africa’s secret gems this
summer. Take a “Sho’t Left” and enjoy
some of the wonderful tourism assets our
writers and photographers scouted out
for this edition (page 34)
Another South African gem is Sisonke
Msimang, activist and author of Always
Another Country: a memoir of Exile and
Home. It’s an intense story of a child born
to exiled parents, travelling from country
to country, finally returning and trying
to discover her identity in Mandela’s
“rainbow nation”. It’s a riveting read,
deeply personal, open and honest. We
were fortunate to meet up with Msimang
in Cape Town and to get some great travel
tips from her (page 11).
Speaking of travel tips, the best advice
you can ever get is to never travel without
travel insurance. See why on page 20.
We wish you a happy, safe summer
of travelling.
