• E N R O U T E / / C R U I S E T R A V E L PLANNER Q TRAVEL Cruises depart from and arrive in Bergen. Fly to Oslo or Bergen via any of the European or Middle Eastern airline hubs. VISAS: South African passport holders require a Schengen visa to visit Norway. SHOPPING: A few bars of Kvikk Lunsj, of course, but also woollen goods like socks and jerseys. Norway is also known for its trolls (yes, trolls) and many gift shops have these for sale. EATING OUT: You should not visit Norway without eating Norwegian salmon and Arctic cod. If you find yourself in Svolvær, Norway’s codfish capital, visit Bórsen. TOP TIP: Wear layers. It is still fairly chilly for South Africans during spring and summer in northern Norway. Make sure you have a waterproof and windproof jacket and several layers you can peel on or off depending on the weather. LANGUAGE: Although the official language is Norwegian, all locals speak very good English. NORTHERN LIGHTS PROMISE Speak to your Sure Travel consultant about Hurtigruten voyages to the Northern Lights in winter. Hurtigruten is so confident that you will see the Northern Lights on your 12-day Hurtigruten voyage that you will receive a six-or seven-day voyage free (terms and conditions apply) if the dazzling display of ethereal colours in the night sky doesn’t appear on your journey. Visit www.suretravel.co.za to find your nearest Sure Travel consultant, or call 0861 47 48 49. Below: You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better way to experience the Northern Lights. © HURTIGRUTEN You can enjoy this brooding landscape with a Lofotpils beer or a shot of akvavit, Norway’s answer to gin, from the comfort of an observation lounge or cosy Norwegian-style café, both perched high above the deck of the Polarys and its panoramic windows that let the beauty of your surroundings in. Embracing the friluftsliv of my Norwegian hosts, I preferred the outdoors deck, where you can feel the enormity of Norway’s scenic splendour and understand why it more than justifiably deserves the title, “The end of the world”.
