THINKING OF SKIPPING
TRAVEL INSURANCE? THINK
AGAIN | Cuba, Turkey, the United
States, France, Antarctica, Qatar and the
United Arab Emirates won’t let you step
foot in the country (or issue a visa) without
proof of travel insurance. Even if you do
slip through the customs checks, in these
countries a one-night hospital stay
without insurance can set you back a
lifetime of savings. For example:

| Heave ho! A pensioner lost his false teeth
after vomiting off the side of a cruise ship – and
reportedly filed a claim for a new pair of dentures
under “lost baggage”. • A couple on holiday in
Malaysia returned to their accommodation to find they’d been
robbed – by monkeys. The little beasts had stolen their clothes
and scattered them across the neighbouring rainforest. The
insurance company paid their claim! • In 2002, the Royal Falcon
Hotel in Lowestoft, Suffolk, insured its staff and customers against
death and disability – at the hands of a ghost believed to haunt its
pub. • A skier who arrived at an Alpine resort to find dismal snow
returned home and claimed for the cost of the new skis she had
bought before her trip. Her claim was rejected.
